ILGA-NAC Elects New Leaders and Embraces Change!

ILGA-NAC Members Elect New Board and Approve Key Strategic and Constitutional Changes at 2024 Regional Meeting

Cape Town, South Africa – November 18, 2024

On November 11, 2024 ILGA-North America and the Caribbean (ILGA-NAC) held its General Meeting and Board of Directors elections in Cape Town, South Africa. The convening was held at the ILGA World Conference and marked a milestone for the region’s 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy efforts. Following lively and robust discussions, members solidified the future direction of the organization and appointed from a list of qualified candidates their regional representatives to the ILGA-NAC Board of Directors.

The incoming Board of Directors reflects the diversity and strength of the region’s 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy movement. Representing Canada are Rob Boulet and Kim Vance-Mubanga, while Kenita Placide and Renae Green will represent the Caribbean. Mohamed Q. Amin and Liaam Winslet, the representatives for the United States, were directly appointed to the board as their positions were uncontested. Together, this dynamic leadership team is poised to guide ILGA-NAC’s efforts over the next two years.

Members also approved the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan, FLOW FORWARD, which outlines a bold vision for the organization’s future. This plan focuses on unity, sustainability, and justice to address the unique challenges faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in the region. Through this strategy, ILGA-NAC will strengthen its impact and ensure meaningful progress in advancing equality.

Another significant decision made at the Regional Meeting was the implementation of voting by proxy. This change ensures greater participation and representation within ILGA-NAC’s democratic processes, particularly for members who  are unable to attend meetings in person. Additionally, members approved an amendment to the organization’s constitution, establishing that all regional matters—including constitutional amendments, standing orders, and board member elections—will now be decided during ILGA-NAC regional conferences.

These outcomes highlight the unwavering commitment of ILGA-NAC’s members to strengthen the organization’s governance and advance its mission. Reflecting on the success of the meeting, Sharon Mottley, ILGA-NAC Regional Program Manager expressed her gratitude to members for their active engagement. “The decisions made today underscore our collective dedication to the future of 2SLGBTQIA+ rights in North America and the Caribbean,” she said.

ILGA-NAC is eager to implement these decisions and build momentum toward achieving its strategic goals. Members and allies are encouraged to remain engaged as the organization works to strengthen advocacy efforts and promote inclusivity throughout the region.
